Farmers taught on SRI system

Dimapur, October 27 (MExN): Marking the technology week, ICAR Nagaland Centre, observed ‘Field Day’ on October 26, 2009 at Singrijan village, Dimapur District, where 35 farmers participated. H.D. Singh, SMS, and K. Rabi, Programme Assistant, demonstrated the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) on this occasion, which is basically helpful for small and marginal farmers under less water availability condition.  In a press release received here, it is stated that this system of paddy cultivation requires less seed (5 kg/ha) and 7-10 days old seedlings per unit area (20 cm × 20 cm), whereas, in traditional system of paddy cultivation, 35 kg/ha seed is required. Only that much of water is required for SRI, which is sufficient to maintain the paddy field at its field capacity. The SRI system gives more yield and, hence, more income to the farmers with less expenditure. Generally, in this system, one plant per hill is transplanted if the age of the seedling is 7-10 days. However, if the age of the seedlings is more than 10 days, two plants per hill is recommended. Further, the total SRI is generally practiced organically.
