Santa or Scrooge

Christmas is just around the corner and some Christians in America are monitoring if some companies and institutions will celebrate it simply as Season (or Winter) Holidays.  There are certain people who wish to sanitize the nation from any memory of Christianity.  While enjoying the festive season and benefitting in business as well, it is hypocritical on the part of such people to ignore the fact that Jesus is the reason for the season.  Subtly many of them substitute 'Merry Christmas' with 'Happy Holidays' (or 'Seasons Greetings').
Many people decry the commercialisation of Christmas, but I personally don't see any reason to be alarmed so long as our focus is on Jesus Christ and the joy He brings.  Festive seasons call for spending and it is the nature of business to increase it's bottom lines by riding on any special occasions.  The investment community looks for Santa's Rally --- an increase in the stock market during the last week of December.
One grim reality for this year is that many may be spending like Scrooge (less generous) because of the troubled economy that is yet to see healthy signs of recovery in some countries, specially the US.  But our concern should not be whether we are spending like Santa or Scrooge, because life is more than just food and clothes and gifts (Matthew 6:25).  If you have wealth, be generous and bless your friends and family members and the poor.  If you're on a tight budget, forego buying lavish gifts even if tradition demands it.  Live within your means.  But most of all, focus on Christ and worship Him.  Merry Christmas!
