Vote India’s 7 Wonders: Naga War Cemetery In
Dimapur : Time for Nagaland’s citizen to go to polls again – but this time a nobler one. The World War II Cemetery in Kohima is famous in its own right, but here could be an opportunity to make it go national. The Naga World War II Cemetery and another listed simply as “Naga Gateways” are the two entrants in NDTV’s Seven Wonders of India nationwide poll. The poll is a collaboration of NDTV and the Union Ministry of Tourism as part of the latter’s ongoing Incredible India! campaign.
Quite curiously, one of North East region’s most celebrated ecological formations, the Duzkou Valley, is nowhere even in the nominations. Perhaps anyone has yet to nominate it. The Naga War Cemetery, in the heart of Nagaland’s capital town Kohima, and “Naga Gateways” in Kohima village, are the two entrants amongst a score dozen of historic and culture heritage sites and edifices from across India. Aside from natural sites, the campaign also includes man-made edifices, historic monuments and cultural centers.
The states are listed in clusters with Nagaland’s two entries clubbed under a link for the entire North East region states. From the north eastern states are a good number of heritage sites, with Assam state figuring in with the most number of entries, with wildlife sanctuary Kaziranga, the Kamakhya Temple, the Brahmaputra River and Brahmaputra’s river island Majuli. The others are Tripura’s famed Neer Mahal and Unakoti Hill, Sikkim’s Tashiding Monastery, Mt. Kanchenjunga and the Changu lake, Manipur’s Loktak lake, Meghalaya’s monolith site Nartiang and Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang monastery.
To vote, users can log on to NDTV’s website or vote from their mobile phones. To vote from mobile phones, SMS 7 to 56388 or log on to mobile.ndtv.com on the phone browser. The campaign is also being telecast on NDTV, with a travelogue highlighting the sites.
A series of special features on the “nominated” marvels from each of the states is being telecast on the news channel.
At the Seven Wonders of India Poll link on NDTV’s website, users can also make entry of their own travelogues and post on the site itself. Each voting link contains pictures of the entry and also a short description of it.
Leading the “race” so far is the Sri Padmanabhswamy Temple in Trivandrum with the Allappuzha and Kumarakom Backwaters in Kerala and the third, Silent Valley National Park also in Kerala, trailing close behind.
Last year, September, NDTV announced the launch of its nationwide campaign “Seven Wonders of India” as collaboration and set to be part of the Union Ministry of Tourism’s Incredible India! campaign. Each month, the seven top nominations from two state clusters will be declared, with the one wonder with the highest votes, from each of the states, being nominated for the all-India selection.
