NAP 1st feeling pinch of Delhi stay
Dimapur| September 1 : Within just a few weeks of being posted at New Delhi, the Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) 1st Battalion has begun to feel the pinch of deployment in the metro. A statement was received today on behalf of the personnel of the1st NAP underlying the pitiful conditions the personnel are living under.
The note stated that no proper accommodation facilities have been provided to the Naga police personnel and the jawans are still sleeping in makeshift tents. “The accommodation provided to us is beyond human acceptance and is unhygienic,” the note lamented. The unhygienic surroundings have apparently led to health problems, with many jawans falling ill and being hospitalized.

Jawans battle metro jungle
Sources from the 1st NAP disclosed to The Morung Express that the facilities assured by the Home Minister before the battalion’s departure from Nagaland is none like it. The sources said basic amenities like dormitory and sanitation has still yet to be provided and that the jawans face problems - even when it rains.
“We have to fold our beddings every time it rains,” they said. They also complain of not being provided with filtered water and many jawans have taken ill due to consumption of the regular supply water which is generally treated with chlorine. It is also reported that jawans posted in very extreme ends of the city receive stale food due to provisions reaching them late. “We are sent for duty at 9 am in the morning to assigned places. Some jawans are stationed in very far corners of the city and by the time the food reaches them in the afternoon…you know the Delhi heat; it is stale by then,” sources said.
One source added that he was told by a few jawans that those manning extreme points of the city sometimes don’t get their food. Beside these ‘basic problems’, the battalion is facing an involuntary pinch in the wallet. The press note from the 1st NAP has mentioned that while the state personnel receive a daily allowance of 110 to 120 rupees, the NAP personnel in Delhi are being granted only 13 rupees per day. In this context, sources have questioned that if the money is being sanctioned by the state to be reimbursed by the centre, why are they being paid ‘peanuts’. However, the Nagaland Director General of Police has simply said that “whatever the amount…I don’t have the details but it is a substantial amount.” Arrears will also be paid to the personnel, he said. Meanwhile, the 1st NAP personnel have urged the state government to sent officials to New Delhi from Nagaland to do a reality-check of the conditions the Naga personnel are living in.

Most Naga men can never tolerate suffering. Back home they are treated like royalties so the slightest discomfort will result in such "pinches". While being supplied with stale food is not right, having to live in tents is part of army life.
