Weapon shortage in Nagaland Police
Kohima | November 27 : Minister for Home Imkong L Imchen today admitted that there is shortage of weapons and ammunition in the newly raised battalions of Nagaland Police in the state. Replying to MLA SI Jamir, the Home minister said arms and ammunitions for the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th NAP (Indian Reserve) battalions are yet to be received by the state police.
When a new battalion is raised, the minister explained, orders are placed for arms and ammunitions to the nodal agency, the Border Security Force. It is processed and then submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs for allocation. Imchen said allocations are made by the Ministry of Home Affairs and placed with various ordinance factories in the country. The factories send Performa invoices to the states in concern and payments are then made by the state. Then only, the ordinance factories intimate the states in concern of the date for collection of the arms and ammunitions. The minister also said that in case of the 12th and 13th IR battalions the Performa invoice was received in the month of August 2009, and payment made by the state in the month of September 2009.
The ordinance factory located at Tamil Nadu is yet to intimate the state when the arms and ammunitions are to be collected. With regard to the 14th and 15th IR battalions, the Home minister said process is on and the Home ministry is yet to allocate the ordinances. To another query, Imchen responded that since the last five years 264 light vehicles (Gypsies) were purchased by the department.
