Cong demands civic polls, women quota

Dimapur, December 21 (MExN): The Nagaland Congress has demanded that the Nagaland government go ahead with the municipal and town councils’ elections. The government deferring the civic polls on feeble grounds is suspicious, the Congress said today. The Congress also demanded that the 33% reservation quota for women be implemented as it has already been passed in the state assembly. There is no reason why it should not be implemented fully, the Congress stated.
Elaborating its points, the Congress said deferring election (to the municipal and town councils) on flimsy grounds  point  to the state government’s inability to administer the provisions of the constitution, stated the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee in a note appended by its president KV Pusa.
“According to the municipal Act elections should be conducted, the moment the terms and tenures of the municipal and town council are over. Also there is no provision for the extension of elections to these bodies or to be postponed in the municipal Act. Therefore elections should be held as per the constitutional provision provided in the constitution,” the NPCC note stated.
“The party once again well advises the state government to go ahead with the municipal and town councils elections where their terms and tenures are over. Questioning of deferring of elections to the Municipal and Town Councils on flimsy grounds mean government’s inability to administer the provision of the constitution provided therein.”
The Congress in Nagaland fully supports the ongoing Naga peace process, the NPCC said. But the Congress made clear that the elections have nothing to do with the peace process as the elections to the Lok Sabha, state assembly and municipal councils under the Constitution of India are regular democratic processes. “…the argument of the DAN government that it would vitiate the peace process is specious,” the NPCC stated. The congress also demands for implementation of 33% reservation in the state as this has been passed in the state Assembly and we do not see any reason why it should not be implemented fully.

I think reservation of 33% seats to women is ridiculous! Do you think Indira Gandhi became PM because she was a woman? Is the current Indian President the Head because of women's reservation? Perhaps too much an analogy, but com'on, compete and show your capabilities if you wish to become a public leader. The most I can agree is the possibility of nominating a woman representative as an honorary member. Thats it!

sometimes reservation really needs and it helps... i guess if you are a naga, then you are also under the reservation of some kind, rite? like ST status.... u might have already digested the ST Scholarship grants and also got some post on reservation.....

there should some analysis in ur rejection.. u cannot just reject it but give an alternative....thats the point of arguement.....u must learn to become a loyal opponent not distructive opponent which is not desirable...

Yeptho, you seem to be living in a narrow small world. The more you analyze the narrower and deeper your thought becomes in such issues as this. You will live forever under consideration. FYI, I'm a Naga, and I don't remember scrapping any advantage because I'm a ST/Naga. Not bragging, but I'm in a position where the competitive world competes- and this opportunity did not come to me because I'm ST/Naga. I competed as one individual like any other on this earth. My point is, let us consider ourselves as no smaller than anyone, and let us involve ourselves in any field/profession because of our capabilities and skills.
