Now extortion in the name of Educated Unemployed Union!
Dimapur, February 7 (MExN): Dimapur police have arrested three persons, including two non-Nagas, on charges of “illegal collection of taxes” in two separate incidents on February 6. Dimapur Police informed that security personnel on routine surveillance duty in the central town areas arrested one person identified as a Hosheto Swu, son of a Lt. Yezhevi of Muditsoko village and residing at Purana Bazaar while extorting Rs. 500 from the shops located at GS Road, Dimapur.
He was extorting in the name of the ‘Educated Unemployed Union of Nagaland (EUUN)’ a press release from Dimapur police informed today. “During search of the arrested accused, 221 receipt coupon of EUUN, 39 leaflets of writing pads of EUUN and one mobile handset was seized from his possession. The seizures were made in the presence of the president of Educated Unemployed Union, Nagaland and chairman, co-ordination committee of EUUN, Dimapur. A case has been registered and the accused has been forwarded to custody,” the police said.
In the second incident, on February 7, two “illegal tax collectors” were apprehended by Dimapur police personnel during surveillance duty in the town area. The accused were extorting from shopkeepers at New Market at the behest of ‘underground elements’ as claimed by them, the police said.
The arrested accuseds have been identified as a Samsul Haque, 28 years son of Janab Ali of Marli village, Karimkanj in Assam and a Krishna Dutta, 48 years son of Lt. Dinesh Dutta of Lumding in Assam. A total of Rs. 1, 63, 640 of the extorted money, so-called “taxes” was recovered from their possession, police said. “A case was registered in this connection and the accused forwarded to the court for remand,” police added.
