Naga orgs warn of illegal immigrants, looming danger

Dimapur, February 7 (MExN): Dimapur civil society today lashed out at Bangladeshi illegal immigrants, holding them responsible for most of the crimes being committed in Nagaland today. Under the patronage of Naga citizens, enraged civil organizations said, the illegal immigrants or “Miyas” (Muslim immigrants) have even grown audacious in committing crimes from rape to murder and extortion
to kidnappings.
In connivance with anti-social Naga individuals and Nagas who patronize the aliens, “the Bangladeshi Muslim people” don’t even show deference for the land and people, the Naga Council of Dimapur and the Naga Women Hoho of Dimapur said today. The two Naga frontals issued a statement, mincing no word against the burgeoning presence of Muslim immigrants in the state.
The Naga Council and Naga Women Hoho of Dimapur referred to the latest case of crime, a rape case this time, committed by illegal immigrants on the night of February 6 in Dimapur. Five “Miyas” (Muslim immigrants) were arrested on the charge of gang-raping a newly married woman and looting her and the husband.
The two organizations said they are “extremely grateful to all the rank and file of East Police station, Dimapur for their prompt action in arresting 4 of the 5 miya (illegal Bangladeshi migrants) accused in the rape of a Naga woman on 6th Feb’ night.” But for the police’s quick response, the accused in all probability would have fled to Assam putting an end to any hope of justice, the statement said.
Genuine Indian citizens such as the Biharis, Marwaris and Punjabis whether they are Hindus, Muslims or Sikhs have been excellent in respecting Naga culture and its people, the two frontals said. However, the statement said, Bangladeshi Muslim people have time and again shown that they do not care for the ethos of the land and people. “The audacity of this heinous crime is further compounded by the fact that the victim’s companion was tied up by the rapists before they went on to commit the act in turns. This incident once again highlights the danger of patronising ‘miya’ people by Nagas – as a source of cheap labour and even in the practice of accommodating them as ‘citizens’ in most of the rural villages in Dimapur district.”
Strategies, action plan
invited from public
The Naga Council and the ‘hoho’ explained further that “adopting miyas as sons and daughters by conferring them with Naga names have become the rule and is more or less a ‘status symbol’ now.” In fact understanding the ‘Naga weakness’ for money, the “’miyas’ have become excellent in pitting one Naga against the other and they thrive in Dimapur town under the patronage of ‘local dadas’.”
The statement said in out right that most of the crimes being committed in the state today related to extortion, kidnapping, rape and murder especially in Dimapur are by the Muslim immigrants.
“It is also a fact that most of the crimes related to extortion, kidnapping, rape and murder in Dimapur are committed by miyas in connivance with Naga anti-socials for which there will be far reaching consequences and the frustrated Naga public of Dimapur should not be blamed if any social disorder arises in Dimapur.”
Time and again, the organizations added, “miyas have shown that they cannot adapt to Naga society and before things spiral out of control, suggestions are required from spirited public to chalk out.” The Naga Council and the Naga Women Hoho have invited opinions, suggestions and strategies from the public to combat the menace of illegal immigrants.
