Naga Council, MCD slam ‘communal’ Assam Muslim union

Dimapur, February 23 (MExN): Two frontal organizations in Dimapur, the Naga Council and the Muslim Council of Dimapur today denounced the statements of a Muslim organization in Assam by the name and style of “Assam Muslim Welfare Union” which had made communal threats recently. The union had accused NGOs in Nagaland working to identify illegal immigrants in Bangladesh, of attempting to “divide” the communities on lines of “religion.”
The Naga Council and Muslim Council of Dimapur termed “wild and outrageous” even as the communities are working to curb rampant influx of illegal immigrants. A joint meeting of Naga Council and the Muslim community was held today in Dimapur.

During the meeting, a number of joint decisions were taken and affirmations made. The Muslim Council of Dimapur has “expressed profound shame, regret” and has apologized to the Naga Council and the Naga people for the “outrageous charges leveled at Naga Council by purportedly non-existent Muslim organization bereft of any knowledge of ground realities.” The Muslim Council of Dimapur had condemne3d the Assam organization and has refuted all its charges. The Muslim community has “vowed to hunt down the authors of the hitherto unknown organization,” a statement arrived at during the meeting said. A copy was received here today.

“The Muslim Council Dimapur shall fully co-operate with PAC to register genuine Muslims and to render full support to flush out illegal immigrants in the state especially Dimapur…” the stamen said. The meeting discussed at length “the diabolic design and motive of inserting the outrageous statement on the day the joint meeting was to take place between PAC/ Naga Council and Muslim community. Numerous opinions surfaced during the meeting expressing deep suspicion on Muslims of Dimapur of using AMWU to insert the news item to divert public attention from the recent Feb 6 gang-rape and ongoing process of detection of illegal migrants.”

Further, the Muslim community has assured to instill confidence among all Naga citizens living, studying, working, etc outside Nagaland and be responsible in view of the threat to Naga citizens already flashed nationwide in print media.

The joint meeting has appealed to all sections of the people to maintain calm and not to exploit the situation to serve selfish interests, neither be provoked by the irresponsible statement of AMWU. Rather, the joint statement said, the citizens are to cooperate “to wipe out elements working to create hostile atmosphere to scuttle socially beneficial processes and urged all citizens of Dimapur to co-exist peacefully and make Dimapur harmonious.”
