Load Shedding at Padum Pukhuri

Well, like potholes, load shedding is here to stay. A week ago, we, at Padum Pukhuri were suffering a minimum of six load shedding a day. That’s not including the frequent 10 to 20 minutes of power failures for God knows what reason and the usual 2-3 hours of blackouts which no one can call load shedding. We were eagerly waiting for the day when things would turn normal when – what do you know? – That WAS normal. And now we’re to brace ourselves for heavy load shedding. Even then my sympathies were with the power Department till on visiting some other areas of Dimapur, I realized that other areas were not suffering as much as us. In fact, many colonies were getting normal power with a couple or so load shedding a day and some, not at all while we have to do with an hour of blackout after every 30 to 45 minutes.

This raises a question – Are there privileged colonies in Dimapur? I don’t think so. And we are certainly not second class citizens. We deserve the same share of electricity that the rest of Dimapur is receiving. Just because there is a private hospital in a locality doesn’t entitle them to 24 hours electric supply. After all, if they can spend crores of Rupees on infrastructure, they can well afford to run a few generators for an hour or two a day.

The Department of power shouldn’t take load shedding lightly and delegate the job to subordinates, rather it should be handled by responsible officers and load shedding timings for all areas published in the local papers so that no colony feels victimized or discriminated against. I’m sure there are some other areas in Dimapur feeling resentful about this unequal distribution of electricity in Dimapur and before things turn bad I hope the Department takes steps to ensure fairness in load shedding because there is no denying the fact that there is either negligence or partiality going on at present.
