Taxi strike cripples Kohima
Kohima | February 2: The second day of the ongoing strike called by the various taxi union units evoked stronger response today as even zonal taxis plying between Kohima and Dimapur went off the roads. Members of the unions assembled at the MLA Hostel Junction (Phoolbari junction) in protest against the killing of one of its drivers at Viswema, and whose corpse was recovered on Sunday, and sought immediate arrest of the culprit.
As the taxi unions appeared to have intensified their agitation, people seeking to commute between Dimapur and Kohima were seen crowding the NST bus station since yesterday afternoon as even zonal taxis chose not to ply, heeding the call of the apex bodies.
At the MLA Hostel junction here today, a large group of members of the taxi community gathered to voice their protest against the killing of one of its members and demand immediate release of the culprits, while the few taxis seen moving about town sported black flags. According to sources, while a few zonal taxis were willing to ply, they were not willing to cross Medziphema (Ghaspani).
The lightning strike was reportedly called by the All Nagaland Taxi Association, Kohima Unit, following the brutal murder of one of its members, Onik Sangma, driver of local taxi (Maruti Van) bearing registration number NL0 1 T 7821. As per sources, some three to four persons had hired the taxi and headed southwards the previous day and since then the driver went missing. The body was found later on Sunday by a group of farmers of Viswema in a wooded area below the National Highway-49, the sources said.
