Soil survey and mapping training underway

Medziphema, March 21 (DIPR): A two-week’s training programme on “Geo-referenced Soil Resource Inventory and Mapping” has been inaugurated in Integrated Extension Training Centre (IETC), Medziphema in Nagaland on March 20. This programme has been jointly organized by National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (ICAR) and Department of Agriculture, Govt. of Nagaland. The programme was chaired by, EC Lotha, Additional Director, Department of Agriculture.
National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS & LUP) is one of the pioneer organizations in India under the Division of Natural Resource Management under Indian Council of Agricultural Research, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India for soil resource inventory towards land use planning. The regional centre of NBSS & LUP at Jorhat, Assam is engaged in conducting soil survey and mapping and consequent land use planning at different states of the North Eastern Regions of the country at different scales. The Bureau has published Soil Resource Maps of North Eastern States of India, viz., Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
The training programme aims at providing the basics of soil resource inventory to the officials of Agriculture and Line Departments of Nagaland. This also highlights the application of Remote Sensing and GIS at different scales in soil resource inventory and retrieval of the data base generated through survey for optimum land use planning and also for soil nutrient mapping of the state to study the soil health.

Chetri, Joint Director, Department of Agriculture; Lanupokim Ao, Principal IETC, Medziphema, Nagaland, Dr. B.J. Deka, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEHR, Jharnapani, Nagaland, Dr. C. Rajkhowa, Director, NRC on Mithun, Jharnapani, Nagaland and Dr. Utpal Baruah, Head, NBSS & LUP, Regional Centre, Jorhat (Assam) also graced the session.
Earlier, short speeches were delivered by EC Lotha, Dr. D. Chetri, Dr. Dipak Sarkar and Dr. C. Rajkhowa. Welcome speech was delivered by Dr. D. Chetri and vote of thanks was given by Lanupokim Ao.
