Field demonstration on SRI & improved packaging conducted

Dimapur, July 22 (MExN): Under National Food Security Mission, the District Agriculture Office, Wokha in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra(ICAR), Wokha conducted large-scale field demonstration programme on System of Rice Intensification and improved package of practices particularly aimed at lowland rice covering the three identified Agro-Ecological situations of the District.

The programme was led by Peter Yanthan, DAO, Wokha with technical support from Khumdemo Ezung, SMS(Agronomy) of Krishi Vigyan Kendra(ICAR), Wokha. The programme was launched at Yampha village on July 5, 2012 where the DAO, Wokha delivered a brief lecture on the aims and objective and the expected outcome of the National Food Security Mission which is being implemented Department Of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland. Before the start of the demonstration, detail technical inputs was deliberated by Khumdemo Ezung, SMS(Agronomy) in which he emphasised on selection of quality seeds, pre-sprouting treatment of selected seed, nursery management, transplanting techniques, weed and water management under the SRI technology. Demonstration on use of the cono weeder which will be provided to the identified farmers under SRI was also conducted where the farmers actively participated.

Demonstration on adoption of improved package was also conducted where the farmers are encouraged to take up proper spacing (25x15cm) instead of random transplanting which is commonly practiced by the farmers. The advantage of maintaining proper spacing is that mechanized weeding can be taken up and that the plant population is increased thereby leading to increase in yield.

The programme ended on July 20 with another demonstration programme at farmers field at Shaki village where the participating farmers thanked the Director, Agriculture and the DAO for initiating the programme.
