Unions appeal students not to panic



Dimapur, August 18 (MExN): The Naga Student Unions in different cities have appealed the students and parents not to panic. Since the northeast issue started, rumours have been circulating creating fear among the people. Many students have left the cities and returned home.

Naga Students’ Union Bangalore
The Naga Students’ Union Bangalore (NSUB) today stated that from the beginning the issues have started and rumors have been spreading out, the Union trying its best to resolve the problem and working sincerely along with the NE students NE Existing Committee as it disturbs the minds of the parents back in Nagaland and NE in General. Vezokho Resu, President NSUB in a press release stated: “As per the information we have received from different people, everything is not true but everything is not wrong.” In regards to this, on Thursday, the NSUB Executives along with NE students held a meeting with the Chief Minister, Home Minister and the DGP of Bangalore. They have assured to protect and safeguard the interest of the NE people. Therefore, the Union has urged the North East people staying in Bangalore not to panic and particular the parents back at home. Naga Students’ Union Chandigarh
In a bid to assuage the tension brewing due to the hate SMSes and MMSes issued to the North-easterners following the riots in Assam, Sh. Deshraj Singh, IPS, Superintendent of Police, City & Headquarters, Chandigarh convened a meeting of students and community leaders of the Northeast states residing in Chandigarh at the police headquarters at about 4:30 pm. today.
A press note from the union stated that about 30 representatives attended the meeting from Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, graced by the leaders of ABVP, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Y. Yanbothung Patton, General Secretary, and Kevingulie Angami, Advisor of the Naga Students’ Union Chandigarh along with delegation from the Tangkhul Sudents’ Union Chandigarh and Zeliangrong Students’ Union Chandigarh gathered at the meeting, which was convened rather urgently without prior notice.
Singh, an IPS 2008 batch AGMUT Cadre, who was recently promoted to the rank of SP on 11 July 2012, assured “hundred per cent safety” and asked to maintain calm to the students, workers and Govt. employees of Northeastern region residing in the Tricity (Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula). Mr Singh also asserted that the City police are alert round the clock for any emergency situation. Emergency telephone helplines of relevant Station House Officers and Police Beat Offices were handed to the meeting attendees. Another meeting is being convened on August 20, the note stated.
On behalf of the Naga Students’ Union Chandigarh, Patton expresses heartfelt gratitude to City police department for the timely security measures being taken up to safeguard the wellbeing of the Northeasterners living in the City Beautiful. The benevolent intent of the concerned authorities all over India is clear: maintain calm, be at peace as before, and do not panic. However, the common concern of the panic-stricken Northeasterners is also clear: how true-to-the-word will the authorities be? It can only be told when the real situation arises.

Naga Student’s Union, Chennai
The Naga Student’s Union, Chennai has in a press note issued by its president Kh. Vahrii appealed to all the parents, Churches and other Organizations back at home not to worry about the safety of their children and Naga community in Chennai. The NSUC is closely monitoring the issue and has nothing to panic as of now, stated a report issued by the union.
The NSUC is also in contact with all the other NSU’s in different parts of India and we have an understanding and commitments from the entire President’s of the NSU’s that we will report and inform one another in case if there is any incidents or sense of danger, the press note stated.
The NSUC stated that it also had contact with Mizoram Welfare Association Chennai, Kuki Student Organization Chennai, Zoumi Welfare Association Chennai and all the Naga Sub-Tribes Leaders and from Meghalaya as well and so far the NSUC have not received any report of incident or cases from any of these communities including offices of the NSU’s though lots of SMSes, News and rumours are doing the round.
The NSUC officials requested all the members not to panic but stay calm and not to pass around any SMSes or rumours without ascertaining the facts. In case of any incident or sense of danger the NSUC requested it members to immediately inform the union officials through its President Vahrii Duo @ 9710102678 and General Secretary Tokato K. Yeptho @ 9884663297. The NSUC informed that they are in touch with the local authorities in Chennai City and that it will take appropriate action on anybody(s) found involved in any case.
