Cash looted, properties damaged at Chumu bazaar
Dimapur, September 4 (MExN): The office of the Chumukedima based Angami Welfare Primary Housing Co-operative Society Ltd has claimed that the Chumukedima town Weekly Bazaar (Saturday) was attacked by violent mob who “attacked/rampaged” the bazaar on September 1, 2012 around 1:25 pm with arms/daos/spears/iron-rods and lathis.
According to a press note issued by Kengulie, Chairman, MMC, Chumoukedima town, the mob entered the bazaar and fired blank shots while creating panic among the innocent civilians to flee. It was claimed that “they started destroying marketing sheds, all kinds of goods, damaging properties and looting cash amounting to approximately worth Rs. 30,00,000 (thirty lakhs)”. t was stated that while the “instigated violent group of some were rampaging the bazaar”, the Angami Welfare Primary Housing Co-Operative Society Ltd. Office bearers approached them peacefully to settle the “complication”. Instead of listening, they began to charge office bearers with daos, spears, iron rods and lathis, it stated. They even attacked Kengulie Shuya (chairman AWPHCS Ltd.) destroyed his mobile with daos and threatened him.
“We the AWPH Co-Operative Society Chumukedima weekly bazaar condemned such barbaric and uncivilized action carried out in the name of bandh without serving any prior information in paper or verbal. We further request and appealed the state government to book the culprit at the earliest and penalize them with proper action, and also recover the damages and losses caused to the vendors who are mostly daily-bread earner and farmers”. The society has also warned any individual or groups on the eventuality of repeating such unwanted activities causing and creating havoc at bazaar in Chumukedima town, shall be responsible themselves for any extreme penalty or action taken against them as may deem fit.

NPF youth laments tribal upheaval
The youth wing of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has lamented “the unfortunate incidents in Kohima and Dimapur,” a reference to the recent tribal violence between some members of two Naga communities. The NPF youth expressed gratefulness that the Angami and Sumi frontal organizations worked to diffuse the situation as well as that the father of the deceased forgave in spite of having lost his son. “His act has been instrumental in preventing wider hostilities,” the youth wing said in a note received here today. The NPF youth wing also lauded the government “for instituting a one man inquiry.” “…the need of the hour for all the leaders was to rise above party affiliation and do the needful as leaders committed to the cause of humanity and society,” the note said.
TVYO: The Tuophema Village Organization (TVYO) expresses deep anguish over the sporadic violence that occurred on September 1 at Kuda (Dimapur) “initiated by a group of misguided people belonging to the Sumi Community” which initially started out as a mark of protest against the unfortunate Kohima Village incident on August 31, 2012 which further aggravated into a rampage, causing unseemly harassment to innocent civilians and targeting particularly the Angamis as apparent from their act of vandalizing properties belonging to our community. Reacting to the incident, a press note issued by Chabeituo Kaco, President TVYO and Viruokuo Zumu, Secretary Information and Publicity TVYO refer to the erratic behavior as “irrational and cowardly” and vehemently condemned the same. Further, the TVYO urge the law enforcing agencies to book the persons responsible for the arson and subsequent damage to properties at the earliest, before the situation turns into further ugly turn.
SARK-SC: Sumi, Ao, Rengma, Kyong - Students’ Co-ordination (SARK-SC) vehemently condemned what it termed “the homicide” of Late Kivika on August 31, 2012, who was beaten to death by QRT under the aegis of KVYO. A press note issued by Kenneth Rengma Co-Convener, Bendang Aier Secretary and Yeben Humtsoe, Joint Secretary of SARK-SC respectively stated that the act meted out to Late Kivika was in no way acceptable in the civilized society and deserve severe punishment to the culprits and the organization responsible for the act. The SARK-SC expresses its deepest contempt over the illegal activities and unruly existence of KVYO in the state capital which is inhabited by the people from around the world. In this regard, the SARK-SC urge the state government to take any corrective measure deemed fit to streamline Kohima into people friendly capital of Nagaland. The SARK-SC also condemned the unfortunate incident along NH 29 on September 1 that has left many people injured and property damaged. The SARK-SC appeals to all section of the people to show maximum restrain and maintain peace and harmony in the society. The SARK-SC acknowledge and appreciated the concerned organization and public leaders for bringing back the situation to normality and appeal both the Sumi and Angami brothers not to communalize the issue in question.
GSUNZ: Garo Students’ Union Nagaland Zone (GSUNZ) condemned the recent incident of custodial death of Kivika Sumi at Kohima on August 31, 2012 wherein the violence between Sumi and Angami brothers was occurred in Dimapur. The union in a press note issued by Biplab K Sangma, president GSUNZ requests the law enforcing agencies to find out the real fact and deliver the justice at the earliest. And also appeal both the Sumi and Angami brothers to co-operate the law enforcing agencies and refrain from the violence remembering the age-old love and affection without taking the law in their own hands. The Union also prayed almighty for the early recovery of all injured during the incident of September 1, 2012.
(AZSU AMN): The All Zeliangrong Students’ Union Assam, Manipur & Nagaland (AZSU AMN) has condemned the highhandedness by the KVYO leading to the custodial death of Kivika on August 31 in Kohima and the riot perpetrated in Dimapur on September 1 by unruly mob leading to damage of private properties, death and several injured. The Union in a press note issued by Finance Secy, AZSU Elungbam Rangkau and General Secy AZSU Nchaheing Kompoing has appreciated the good gesture of APO, SH and other Naga Civil Societies for maturely and firmly handling the tense situation from further escalation in true Christian spirit of brotherhood to maintain peace within the Nagas.
CAN: The Catholic Association of Nagaland in a press note issued by Elias T.Lotha, Secretary General stated that it has been keenly following the progress of the peace process and has been humbly contributing to the strengthening of the Naga family. “We observe that we have been resilient enough to withstand tremendous obstacles and have also come through many tribulations – all as a united Naga family…We truly feel the hurt by the state of affairs that took place between the Angami and Sumi brothers and the subsequent chaotic situation in its wake. We truly appreciate the mutual understanding through which the situation was resolved. Our people and our land need peace most…” it stated in the note.
