Hundreds of students under the aegis of Mizoram’s apex student organisation, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), on Tuesday staged demonstration at Lengpui Airport in Aizawl and waved black flags at Mizoram's lone Lok Sabha MP, C. Lalrosanga as he arrived in the airport in the afternoon.
Lalrosanga has come under severe attack from the student body and opposition parties for allegedly voting in favour of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in the Parliament in December last.
Led by MZP president B. Vanlaltana, the protesters not only carried black flags and anti-CAA posters but also wore Mizo traditional shawls- “Pawndum,” to express their anger and disapproval against the Lok Sabha MP for supporting the amended citizenship act.
Apart from seeking apology from Lalrosanga, the protesters also demanded that the MP should resign from his post for his alleged “faulty practice” and acting against the interest of the people of Mizoram.
Addressing a function at the protest site, B. Vanlaltana said that CAA is harmful for Mizoram which is facing "illegal influx" from Bangladesh for decades. He also said that the MZP has been opposing the CAB/CAA.
On their future course of action, Vanlaltana said they will act in accordance with North East Students’ Organisation (NESO).
The MZP president then denied that the protest was politically motivated.
“There is no political interest behind the protests against CAA. The MZP does not support or against any political party. We are just opposing CAA as it is harmful for our religion and our culture,” he said, adding that the MZP is fighting for the cause of the Mizo people.
Also speaking on the occasion, NESO Finance secretary and MZP leader, Ricky Lalbiakmawia said that Mizoram is still vulnerable to illegal influx although it has been exempted from the purview of CAA.
