The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) vice president, Dr. Kenneth Chawngliana on Monday took a dig at the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) saying it was "backsliding even as it rules" the state over only 10 months after it won the state assembly polls in November last year.

Addressing a political session at ZPM office here, Chawngliana said that Mizoram is moving backward in term of development within 10 months after the MNF came to power.

He alleged that the MNF government headed by Zoramthanga has not only failed to implement but abandoned its poll promises to distribute Rs 3 lakh each to every household through its flagship programme Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP). He also expressed unhappiness over the government's renaming of the state’s premier medical college Mizoram Institute of Medical Education Research (MIMER) to Zoram Medical College (ZMC).

“Almost all the newly established medical institutions are designed to be research centres. MIMER was also designed by the previous government to be a research a centre in the future, but the MNF government has reduced it to only a graduate medical college,” he said.

Chawngliana then said that the border dispute between Mizoram and Assam is unlikely to be resolved during the "MNF's rule". He said that a mosque and a Forest house have been already constructed on the disputed land at Zophai and near Vairengte respectively after the MNF came to power.

The ZPM leader also accused the MNF government of snatching away the power of Mizoram Public Service Commission(MPSC) by establishing sub-ordinate recruitment body.

He alleged that the state government is trying to recruit police and other government jobs through the sub-ordinate recruitment body.

“The MNF recruited over 100 police constables to favour its party members during its previous rule. But majority of the policemen have died in alcohol related illness,” he said.

He then asked the state government to stick to the agreement signed with civil societies on Bru repatriation issue.

Meanwhile, lone Lok Sabha member from Mizoram, C. Lalrosanga said that he was committed to fulfill his poll promises.

In his address during a party meeting at MNF office here on Monday, Lalrosanga said that he will oppose anything that will be harmful for Mizoram.

He also said that in the meeting of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) held recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had reiterated that no changes would be made to Article 371, which gives special status to many Northeastern states.

He also claimed that he had told the NEDA meeting that the people of Mizoram strongly opposed to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
