Nagaland Police stunned as New Market enter final
Kohima | November 25 : Local favourites New Market stunned seven-time champions Nagaland Police by a solitary goal in the first semi-final match played today to sail into the final of the ongoing Royal Gold Cup. After ousting the defending champions, New Market will now clash with either Dimapur District XI or Veterans Sporting Club Phek in the final on Saturday.
The defending champions appeared to be out of form and were seen fumbling throughout the match even as the cops got several opportunities to convert. Spurred on by a strong crowd of cheering local supporters, the New Market boys appeared to be everywhere, dominating throughout the game to finally stun the defending champions through a spectacular goal from the boots of Mathew Yhome.
Earlier, Mathew had missed a golden opportunity to score in the 28th minute in the first half while Rakesh also missed a great chance.
On the other hand, Asa and Renthungo of Nagaland Police also got opportunities to score but were foiled by New Market keeper Dina on both occasions. A powerful shot by Renthungo bounced off the goalpost. The New Market custodian displayed some of the most spectacular saves witnessed in this edition of the tournament.
The all-important goal came through a powerful shot from Mathew which went past rival custodian Vikehie and straight into the nets in the 78th minute in the second half.
With today’s upset win, New Market XI has now become the favourites to lift the trophy. It will clash with the winner of Thursday’s second semi-final match between Veterans Sporting Club Phek and Dimapur District XI.
Today’s match patron was Dr. Nicky Kire while KMC Chairperson Vipopal Kintso will be the match patron on Thursday.
