No takers for Team India, Sahara benefits
New Delhi, December 2 (AGENCIES): Sahara's contract as sponsor of the Indian cricket team has been extended till June 2010. This was decided at a meeting of the BCCI marketing committee on Wednesday. Sahara's contract was to have ended on December 31 and had earlier been extended by three months. It has now been extended by six months. The reason for the extension is that while companies have shown interest in sponsoring the Indian team, there are no real bidders. And no company seems willing to pay the price the BCCI is asking for. Sahara's contract was a four-year-deal signed in 2006 for Rs 400 crores. The BCCI is now asking companies to top that and pay a price of somewhere around $ 35 million (about Rs 162 crore) annually. Also, the ground sponsorship rights that were with World Sports Group (WSG) for 3.25 crore per match were also up for a fresh bid. The WSG was wanted to give 2.5 crore per match for the fresh deal. The BCCI rejected this reduced offer and has decided to put out a fresh bid.
No Indian shortlisted for IHF award
CHENNAI, DECEMBER 2 (AGENCIES): Surprisingly, no Indian figures in the list of nominees for the International Hockey Federation's 2009 Men's Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year awards. Out of the Olympics fold after their failure to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Games, India had to make do with participating in minor tournaments or bilateral series just to keep the show going over the past one year. The only consolation has been an automatic berth in the 2010 World Cup by virtue of being the hosts. The list of nominees for the men's award include previous winners Teun de Nooijer of the Netherlands (2003, 05, 06), Pol Amat of Spain (2008) and Jamie Dwyer of Australia (2004). All the players, who are currently participating at the ABN AMRO Champions Trophy in Melbourne, Australia, voted and the FIH established shortlisted the candidates for the two prestigious awards whose winners will be announced during the final weekend of the Champions Trophy, according to a FIH press release.
