Dimapur, May 10 (DIPR): The 17th tournament of Chessore Area Sports Association (CASA) got underway on May 8, 2012 at Chessore village public ground with Parliamentary Secretary for IPR, Economics & Statistics, R Tohanba, as the chief guest at the inaugural programme.
Addressing the players and participants, the chief guest underscored the importance of games and sports in human lives and said that games have been played since the dawn of civilization not only to keep oneself physically fit but also to bring people together. "Since ancient times, games have played a crucial role in human lives and with beginning with the Greek Olympics, games and sports have brought people and cultures together and helped in fostering peace among nations," Tohanba said.
Coming to Nagaland, Tohanba said the DAN government introduced sports policy to help young sportspersons to realize their full potentials. He said the government is providing attractive incentives to budding sportspersons and encouraging them to break into the national and international arenas. He said given the right training and direction, Nagas have it in them to excel in games and sports and cited the examples of football legend late Dr. T Ao and Chekrovolu Swuro who have made Nagas proud by excelling in the international arena.
Tohanba said the two exceptional players should serve as an inspiration to young Naga men and women that it is possible to reach the height if one has determination and courage to overcome all odds. He urged the players to play in true sportsmen spirit and to take winning and losing in their stride. The Parliamentary Secretary also kicked off and witnessed the first soccer matched played between last year's CASA defending champion Huker Village and Chessore 'B' teams.
Altogether, nine teams from Chessore area are vying for the football trophy. Besides football, the other discipline included volleyball. Chairman CASA, H Lakiumong, delivered the welcome address.
