2nd Unity Cup in Sept
DIMAPUR, AUGUST 2 (MExN): After the NPL, it is now time for other football events to share the limelight. The second edition to the successful Unity Cup is scheduled for September. The organizers have promised the second edition will be much bigger in terms of team representation and cause. The theme, this year will be ‘Stay Clean, Stay healthy’.
Youngs’ Club Dimapur – the organizers of the tournament said that through the tournament, they want to spread the message of healthy living, particularly among the young, while building a healthy generation and eradicating ‘isms’ from the society. “The cup is not a business purpose, we just want to promote young people and sports,” said the president of the club, Jenpu Rongmei. Besides promoting budding footballers, the objective of the event is to work towards eradicating social stigma and discrimination; and keeping this objective in mind, “we’re supporting children living with and affected by HIV & AIDS.”
Daniel Gangmei, convenor of the organizing committee said, “Through the event, we expect to expose our players,” while setting the stage for playing at bigger arenas. Footballers with ambition of playing at higher divisions are also welcome to come for trials, added Lanuchuba Imchen, member of the technical board fort the tournament. “If Players want to play outside, we’re ready to help,” said Imchen, who has had vast experience playing at the top division of Indian football.
The tournament, which begins on September 5 and will be held over 10 days, will have slots for a maximum of 16 teams. The trophy will be sponsored by MLA, KL Chishi. The organizers are hopeful of participation of two teams from outside the state. Entry forms will be issued from next week. The organizers also welcomed any individual or organization to come and be part of the event.
Youngs’ Club, formed in 2010 is a government registered organization and is actively involved in voluntary social service. The club is currently supporting 9 children and is in talks with a Delhi-based social organization - ‘Pravah’ to jointly work for the uplift of school dropouts here. The organization works with young people to impact issues of social justice through youth citizenship action.
