Nagaland MPs’ support to CAB ‘unfortunate’: NPRAAF

Dimapur, December 12 (MExN): The Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) today termed the supports extended to CAB by two Members of Parliament from Nagaland as “unfortunate.”

“It is unfortunate that Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was supported by our MPs. Even though our state is most vulnerable to influx of illegal immigrants,” the Forum said in a statement issued by its information and Publicity wing.

“The intelligent MPs were blind to see that CAB was prelude to one nation one religion and uniform civil code,” it asserted.

Arguing that the CAB should have been “opposed in Toto” by the MPs, the NPRAAF maintained that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government  “hoodwinked the northeast  by assuring that,  ILP and Eastern Bengal frontier regulation Act 1873 will empower the NE states.”

The ILP is “already in place but influx of refugees is unabated,” it added.

The Forum further noted that passing of the Bill on religious line itself is “unconstitutional and undemocratic,” adding, “the intelligent people of the north east region refuse to buy the CAB.”

It further appealed the state Government to introduce a bill in the Next Assembly session, for dual citizenship, where "A citizen of the state will automatically become a citizen of India but a citizen of India will not be necessarily a citizen of the state unless he is a natural citizen and not naturalized."

Unless such an effective measure is taken to protect the indigenous citizens of the state,  Nagaland along with  North East states will be totally “annihilated by illegal immigrants in the years to come and our posterity will never forgive us for our inaction,” the NPRAAF added.
