Awareness on HIV & AIDS just begun
If you ask a class 3 student likely around the age of 8 or 9, about HIV & AIDS, in the rural areas of Nagaland or say for that matter around the periphery of Kohima & Dimapur city, the most probable answer would be NO. And that is the level of awareness we have! When most of the phase wise HIV & AIDS program and sponsorship (International and national) is over, and when a small state like Nagaland is supposed to be educated enough in this subject and atleast no new reports of positive cases, we just came across a small debate on paper over the last few days which also partially projects the status of how thin the awareness on this subject it is!
There are instances i came across where public are being misled by certain individuals in the form of testimonies and speeches arrogating so convincingly that HIV and AIDS are just like any other diseases and that with ART we can live quite a normal life just like anybody does. Most of such testimonies and speeches come from alcohol or drug addicts recovering positive people. My point here is that, proper training should be given and protocol must be maintained before any public speech is made on issues like HIV, AIDS and the stigma involved, keeping in view that there is always a vulnerable section of people particularly school children, where damage could be irreparably high.
If at all prevention is the only cure for HIV and AIDS, there is still so much to do to educate the vulnerable children of Nagaland. The past campaigns actually didn’t work as compared with the quantum of resources that has pumped into the state. WHAT NEXT NOW?
