TVC on usage of ‘Saramati’
The Thanamir Village Council is extremely encouraged at the efforts by the 18 Villages in Pungro area under the nomenclature/name of "Saramati Awung Conservation and Management Society (SACMS)". We are all aware of the importance and needs for conservation in regard to our environment here in Nagaland and the outside world, and the initiatives to this supported by the SACCON and the NEPED is encouraging.
However, the Thanamir Village Council would like to inform the SACMS and the supporting agencies that the nomenclature is objected in reference to the word "Saramati" on the ground that the concerned village council is also equally aware and presently involved in Biodiversity Conservation on its own under the nomenclature "Saramati Biodiversity Conservation" in an around Saramati Mountain (Awung). The works and efforts of the conservation are well within the geographical and territorial limits of Thanamir Village within in which Saramati incidentally falls.
The Village Council had earlier made it clear to the then visiting Dr. Shankar to Thanamir Village along with some local guides/associates that the Village Council was engaged on its own (by the community) and hence declined to be part of any other efforts. Again, during the 19 Villages joint meeting at Pungro Town, Thanamir Village again declined in the same line and is not a signatory to the formation and efforts of SACMS. Further more, during a visit to the village by the local associates for the same, the Village Council again made it clear in good faith about its stand. The Village Council informed that the Council and the citizens of the Village shall extend full buffer co-operation in their efforts SACMS but shall not be a part of the society.
In the given situation, this will certainly lead to confusion and misconception in the conservation efforts at the ground/area if not rectified/changed. We would like to therefore make it clear that while we are not opposed to the efforts of SACMS as mentioned before, the name of Saramati should not be used as it is well within our jurisdiction where we are incidentally and equally engaged in efforts of Biodiversity Conservation. In our method of conservation, we look beyond birds and animals of the wild and equally focus on the entire living organisms & elements including the land, water and air, and in-corporate the age-old man and environmental balances and relationship.
Geographically we are divided by the Likimro River and catchment area/water shed which is another local father. We look forward to co-operate with one another in the neighbouring projects/efforts of Saramati Biodiversity Conservation by the Thanamir Village Council and the SACMS. Birds and animals of the wild are not confined within boundaries and territories; therefore we keep our future options open for future joint projects/adventures through co-operation. Until then, once again Thanamir Village Council would like to request SACMS to omit the word ‘Saramati’ in the nomenclature as informed.
