Rs. 1 Thousand crores plus loss in Manipur by agitations
Imphal, August 19 : A hefty Rs.1319.96 crores (one thousand one hundred and nine crores rupees) . That is the total amount of money that the state of Manipur has lost due to state wide bandhs and national highway (NH) blockades imposed by various organizations of the state between April 1, 2004 and January 31, 2007.
This was disclosed in a press release issued by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Manipur from the records of Directorate of Economic and Statistics. The DIPR has also given details of the loss year wise.
According to the record of the Directorate of Economic and Statistics, there were 20 days state wide bandhs and 60 days of nationalhighways blockades in the year 2004-05. The state wide bandhs led to a loss of Rs. 22/ per head per day totalling to a lost of Rs. 5.34 crores per day. And the NH blockades led to a lost of Rs. 9 per head per day totalling to a loss of Rs. 2.32 crores per day.
It also added that in the year 2005-06 there were a total of 48 state wide bandhs which led to a lost of Rs. 24/ per head per day totalling to lost of Rs. 6.13 crores per day. And a total of 96 days of NH blockade led to a loss of Rs.11/ per day per head totalling to Rs. 2.67 crores per day.
The year of 2006-07 with a total of 42 days of state bandh recorded a high loss amounting to a loss of Rs.6.44 crores per day. The DIPR also revealed the details of money lost due to the bandhs and blockades called by different organisational bodies of the state.
It revealed that the bandhs and blockades called by the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) and the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) had resulted in the highest loss of money summing up to Rs. 144.10 crores in the mentioned years.
The bandhs and strikes called by Meitei Erol Eyek Loinasilon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) resulted a loss of Rs. 105.10 crores; Additional DC Demand Committee led to a loss of Rs. 96.80 crores; Jiri District Demand Committee, Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and Democratic Students’ Alliance Manipur (DESAM) agitation had incurred a loss of Rs. 70.91 crores; Sadar Hill District Committee caused the loss of Rs. 54.45 crores; the Zeliangrong Students’ Union (ZSU), IT Road Development Committee, KSO led to the loss of Rs. 52.41 crores; All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) and ACTP cost the government Rs. 43.16 crores; the APUNBA Lup affecting Rs.35.55 crores; Manipur Forward Youth Front (MAFYF) cost the state Rs. 27.17 crores and the ATSUM alone accounting for Rs. 24.45 crores.
Therefore, from April 1, 2004 to January 31, 2007, there was a total amount of money lost was Rs. 1319.96 crores by the state of Manipur due to the general strikes and economic blockades on the national highway especially by these bodies and organisation of the state, the DIPR press release informed.
