Video cameras to discipline taxi drivers
Shillong | August 27 : The whip to straighten unruly and indisciplined taxi drivers in Shillong gets more pronounced with the district administration using video cameras to support its penalising objectives against the guilty. After taking punitive action by imposing a fine on commercial vehicles who failed to use the government embarkation and disembarkation point, many taxis continue to flout the norms. In a follow up action today, the East Khasi Hills district administration used videography to catch the erring taxi drivers.
Informing about the more stringent measures used by the administration to discipline commercial vehicles as well as to ease congestion, District Commisioner of East Khasi Hills Bhalang Dhar said, “Based on the support of the video footages, we will serve a show cause notice to 46 taxi drivers”, adding, “Lack of substance in explaining to the filmed error will lead to the suspension of the driver license for a period of one month. However, this is not what we will act, if a taxi driver or the taxi is found to have violated the rules twice, we will suspend the taxi permit for another month”, stated Dhar, even as he warned of violators with a far more stringent action.
Stating that the administration has been forced to take stern action in view of the growing indiscipline amongst the taxi drivers, Dhar recalled about the call for co-operation in the past few weeks and the subsequent imposition of fine on 70 commercial vehicles for Rs 200 and Rs 500 respectively to make them comply with the enshrined parameters.
