NU: Governor asked to intervene
Dimapur, November 20 (MExN): Over the years, both the teaching and non-teaching staff has continued appealing to the Chief Rector of Nagaland University, the Governor of Nagaland, to intervene into the myriad scandals in the university, albeit mostly to lukewarm response.
This time too, the Nagaland University Teachers’ Association of Kohima and Nagaland University Non-Teaching Staff Association issued a joint statement of appeal to the governor to the present impasse between the two sister organizations and on the other hand, the vice chancellor of Nagaland University. They have requested the governor to ask the out-of-station vice chancellor to attend office and settle the matter by October 23.
In a letter addressed to the governor, the two organizations said to have submitted a representation to the Vice Chancellor of NU on October 8 asking him (VC) not to transfer accounts from one bank to another when investigations are on in connection with financial irregularities.
“In spite of our representation, the vice chancellor went ahead issuing directive to transfer the fund. Hence, an ultimatum dated 15th October, 2009 was issued asking him to immediately revoke the directive and also to transfer the Fixed Deposits to Current Account and utilize the same for the purpose it was sanctioned,” the joint letter stated.
The governor was informed that “to our utter shock and dismay,” the vice chancellor, instead of complying with the request had written a letter “with scant respect” to the two sister organizations demanding to withdraw their letters.
“The two associations have taken serious view of the letter and thus wrote back to the vice chancellor, asking him to withdraw his letter and tender apology for the same. The vice chancellor has since left station and is out till date instead of settling the issue he has created,” the organizations stated.
The NUTA and the NUNTSA have requested the governor to direct the vice chancellor to attend office and settle the matter by October 23. In a related matter, the NUNTSA in a meeting held on November 20 has unanimously resolved to continue its ongoing agitation till the fulfillment of the organization’s demands. The NUNTSA viewed with serious concern what it stated was the office memorandum issued by the Registrar of Nagaland University on November 19 calling for “resumption of duties with immediate effect.”
An angry NUNTSA stated: “In this connection, the House observed it as a direct insult to the association with the sole motive of suppressing the democratic and peaceful movement of the NUNTSA in fighting for their genuine rights. The threat to enforce the principle of ‘no work no pay’ is a clear indication of the same. The Vice Chancellor and the Registrar should have rather attended to the needs of the association by being present in office instead of running away. The vice chancellor and the registrar has shown least concern and taken no initiative to resolve the issue rather avoiding and resorting to threats with arbitrary impositions.”
