Huge explosives seized from Kuki ultras

Silchar, November 23 (PTI):
The army on Sunday arrested three Kuki militants in South Assam’s Cachar district and seized huge cache of arms and ammunition from their possession. Acting on a tip off, the army arrested three Kuki ultras -- Kelvin Nakulsa, Champai Sippon and Laikola Kangun -- from Bhuban Hill under Lakhipur police station, defence sources said. The army seized 56 AK-56 rifles, nine SLR guns, two motor guns, 11 powerful bombs, 19 magazines of SLR, five machine guns, one rifle, one barrel of LMG and 5,000 assorted explosives from their possession.

Kidnapped Manipuri advocate freed

Imphal, November 23 (PTI):
A Manipuri advocate, who was abducted almost a month ago by militants from here, has been released at Guwahati in Assam, police said today. M I Sharma was captured while purchasing washing machine from a shop at Nagamapal area, on October 25 and was freed at Guwahati yesterday, they said. The ultras of Kangleipak Communist Party (Wanglen Khuman group) took Sharma to an unknown place and later to jungle hide-outs in Assam and neighbouring north-eastern states, he told media after his release. Sharma said he had faced extortion demands of about Rs 15 lakh in the past by some militant factions, this time the KCP Wanglen group only wanted him to do some paper work for the outfit and no particular demand was made.

Tea estate owner kidnapped in Assam

Tinsukia (Assam), November 23 (PTI):
A tea estate owner was today kidnapped by suspected ULFA militants in Tinsukia district of Assam, police said. The 27-year old Dinesh Sarmah, owner of Bijuliban tea garden was abducted by four armed motorcycle-borne youths when he was on his morning round along with his uncle, they said. They also hit Sarmah’s uncle with a stick injuring him. The police found empty cartridges of a 9 mm pistol at the spot from where Sarmah was taken away.

Powerful IED recovered near Assam-Arunachal border

Tezpur, November 23 (PTI):
A powerful IED was recovered today in Assam’s Sonitpur district near the border with Arunachal Pradesh.  Defence sources said patrolling troops of Assam Rifles recovered the IED, weighing more than 10 kgs, which was kept on the road at Ninth Mile near Bhalukpong.  The bomb disposal squad of the army rushed to the spot and defused it.  Police suspect that the IED was planted by NDDB (Ranjan Daimary-led faction) militants.
