Company manager kidnapped in Assam
Karimganj, December 1 (PTI): The manager of a private construction company was kidnapped today by unidentified miscreants in south Assam’s Barak valley, police said. Himangshu Das (32), site in-charge of Udita Construction Company, engaged in road construction was kidnapped at gun point from Lakhidchera area. The abductors took Das to a tea estate on the Indo-Bangla border and are demanding Rs one crore as ransom for his release, police said, adding they have intercepted a telephone call from them. The abductors have demanded the money within 24 hours failing which they threatened to kill Das. The company is owned by personal secretary of senior Assam minister Gautam Roy.
Five militants arrested in Manipur
Imphal, December 1 (PTI): Five militants of different outfits have been arrested in Manipur in the past two days, police said today. Commandos attached to the office of Superintendent of Police (Imphal East district) arrested two militants of United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) from Sanjenthong area here on November 27. They have been identified as -- S Modhu (35) and N Basanta (35), a police release said. The same team of commandos also nabbed a militant of People’s United Liberation Front, identified as Najemuddin (38), from Iril area in Imphal East district, the release said. An insurgent of United National Liberation Front, identified as N Usa (32), was arrested from Kongba area in the district on November 28.
Smuggled woods seized
Srirampur, December 1 (Merinews): On Sunday, November 29, the forest department of Srirampur, with the help of the Srirampur police launched an operation and raided village Gokulkata near Assam-Bengal border of Gossaigaon sub-division and seized many illegal woods. The woods were being stored in the place for the last few days and smugglers were preparing to supply it. Twenty-seven logs of woods having market value of Rs 1.50 lakh were seized from the Assam-Bengal border. Sources said that there were nine logs of shagun tree, two logs of sidha tree, 12 logs of shal tree, three logs of sishu tree and one log of gamhari tree.
One injured in bomb blast in Manipur
Imphal, December 1 (AGENCIES): A youth identified as L Premjit (25) was injured when suspected militants exploded a bomb targetting a convoy of security personnel in Imphal west district of Manipur, police said today. Sources said the militants, standing by the roadside at Sagolband Bijoygovinda near here, lobbed a powerful bomb at a passing CRPF convoy going from Imphal to the headquarters at Langjing, about 20 km west of here, yesterday. Premjit, who was a bystander, was injured by a splinter. The explosion occured soon after the convoy passed through the area, sources said adding that had it exploded a few seconds earlier, there would have been several casualties. No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the crime. A senior CRPF personnel said they searched the area seconds after the explosion but the militants escaped on two wheelers.
