AMWJU demands apology from DGP
Imphal | October 10 : The All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) has condemned the act of the state Director General of Police (DGP) Y. Joykumar and demanded a transfer and an unconditional apology from him before October 14 for forcing the media persons to reveal their sources regarding the reports from Pallel and Kakching related to the smuggling of fertilizers. The reports appeared on the local newspapers on Friday, October 10 wherein reporters had gone to Pallel in Chandel district and later to Kakching in Thoubal district to find out more on the news of ‘smuggled fertilizers’.
In a press release issued by AMWJU on Friday, the media body informed that a meeting of the union along with senior editors and journalists strongly condemned the act of the DGP and demanded an unconditional apology from the state police chief by October 14.
According to the press release, all the reporters who went to Pallel and Kakching on Thursday, October 9 were summoned by the DGP in his office chamber and asked to reveal their sources of reports. The DGP termed them undemocratic, accused them of yellow journalism, and working beyond the journalistic ethics, added the press release of the Manipur journalists’ body.
Further, while condemning the act, the media union resolved that the DGP would be solely responsible for any future unwanted incidents occurring to the reporters regarding the sources and the reports. The union also held that the DGP should punish ‘his police’ personnel and not threaten the media persons in this regards. Pointing out that such act was a threat to the democracy of the state, the media union appealed to the chief minister to transfer the DGP. The union also resolved to boycott all news coverage of the chief minister if the DGP was not transferred and if he did not apologize to the media by October 14. These resolutions of the AMWJU have also been sent to the Press Council of India (PCI), informed the press release.
