‘Miscreants from Assam behind border tension’

Dimapur, February 15 (MExN): The Lirmen Senso Mungdang (LSM), Mokokchung has reported that on February 12, 2012, a certain group of people from Moghroi Gaon under Jorhat District (Assam) had burnt a huge area of already-cut Jhum land within the jurisdiction of Tsuremen and Akumen, under Lirmen Village. A press note issued by S. Yanger Longchar, president, LSM alleged, “This act was committed by the miscreants under the protection of Assam Police in presence of local media officials from Assam. We the people from Lirmen in unison therefore vehemently condemn this act committed by the said miscreants.”
The note further alleged that at the same time on the same day, one Nungshi Longkumer a citizen from Lirmen Village was detained by a group of Moghroi Gaon Villagers and was beaten mercilessly, while he was returning home from Jorhat.
LSM in the note also mentioned an incident that took place in Lirmen land in the year 2010. “It was on 28th March, 2010 when some members of SULFA (Assam) had burnt down a vast area of Lirmen Jhum land. We reported about this incidence to the government of Nagaland. And we want to have peaceful co-existence with our neighboring people of Assam,” stated the note. LSM therefore appealed to the government of Nagaland to take prompt action to protect the residents of the border areas of Assam and Nagaland and also ‘to give chance to enjoy peace and tranquility in the border area.’
