Three Killed, Four Injured in Road Mishap

Guwahati, February 25 (PTI): Three persons have been killed and four others critically injured in a road mishap in Assam's Goalpara district today, police said. A speeding truck collided with an autorickshaw at Bolbola area killing three persons on the spot and injuring four others. The condition of three of the injured, including a woman, was very critical and they have been admitted to the Goalpara Civil Hospital. The dead have been identified as Sakaruddin and Nazrul Islam while the third was yet to be identified. The drivers of both the truck and the autorickshaw are absconding and the police have launched a search to nab the duo, sources added.

Three militants nabbed in Assam

Guwahati, February 25 (PTI): Three militants, two of the ULFA and another of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were nabbed from different parts of the state today, police said. Acting on a tip-off, the police launched a search operation in Noshdia area of Upper Assam's Tinsukia district and nabbed two suspected ULFA militants belonging to the anti-talk faction of the outfit. A 7.65 pistol and two rounds of ammunition have been seized from the possession of the militants who have been identified as Kehsav Gogoi and Shofik Gogoi. In another incident, a NDFB militant was apprehended from Salbari in Baksa district during an operation by the police. The militant has been identified as Sanjiv Swargiary and a 9 mm pistol with two rounds of ammunition along with two mobile phones have been seized from his possession, sources added.

AR conducts medical camps

Dimapur, February 25 (MExN): 35 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ IG AR (South) organized a mega multi-specialty cum dental camp at Sajik Tampak in Chakpikarong sub-division of Chandel district on February 24-25, 12.  The camp was inaugurated by Commander, 26 Sector Assam Rifles. Laboratory facilities for testing of blood sugar, hemoglobin, ECG and urine were provided. Medical officers from Assam Rifles alongwith specialists from RIMS,Imphal  participated in the camp. A fully equipped mobile dental van along with a dental officer was also in attendance. More than 2000 patients from Sajik valley were benefited from the camp. In another occasion, the medical team of 9 Assam Rifles organized a medical camp at Sijang village of Chandel district   on 24 February 2012. More than 200 patients from Sijang and adjoining villages were diagnosed and provided medicines. The medical team, during its interaction with the villagers also delivered a lecture on HIV/AIDS, seasonal ailments and its prevention measures.

Assam govt prohibit strikes in Assam Gas Company

Guwahati, February 25 (PTI): Assam government has prohibited strikes in all services relating to the Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL) within the state. An official release issued here today said that the prohibition will come into force with immediate effect for a period of six months. The prohibition is applicable to all sectors related to production, storage, supply or distribution of natural gas within the state, the release added.

AR organizes friendly cricket match

Dimapur, February 25, (MExN): 28 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under IGAR(S)  organised a friendly cricket match between officers of 9 Sector and students of Manipur University. The match was witnessed by more than 500 spectators at Canchipur inside the Manipur University premises.  Each team played 20 over.  After winning the toss Manipur University team batted first and scored 164/4 in 15 over. HQ 9 Sector Team while chasing and scored 118/5 in 15 over.  Manipur University won the match by 46 runs; Sadanand of Manipur University was declared the man of the match.  A token of appreciation was present to the cricketers by Commander 9 Sector AR who was the Chief Guest for the function. Speaking on the occasion, Commander 9 Sect Assam Rifles pledged his support for promotion of sports and cultural events among the youth of Manipur.  He asked people to come forward and move progressively towards peace and prosperity and assured them of full support and cooperation of the Assam Rifles in achieving it.

Assam to provide free medical facilities to 60 L students

Guwahati, February 25 (AIR): The Assam Government has taken an ambitious scheme to provide free medical treatment to around 62 lakh students in 60,000 schools across the state. According to official sources, students below the age group of 12 years are to be covered under the scheme. Three thousand volunteers of the National Rural Health Mission and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan along with doctors would be engaged to carry out health check-ups in the schools from September this year. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has assured to sanction Rs 50 crore from the state exchequer for smooth implementation of the scheme. The State Government has also decided to open separate hospitals for special treatment of child and women.

Tiger census begins in KNP

Guwahati, February 25 (PTI):  Tiger census has begun in all the four forest ranges of the world famous Kaziranga National Park and is expected to be completed within 45 days. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh to conduct the census in the Park which is being conducted in Kohora, Bagori, Agoratoli and Burhapahar ranges, Park Director Surajit Dutta said today. Camera trapping method will be used to conduct the census.
