Security forces launch manhunt to rescue abducted SBI AGM

Shillong, February 25 (PTI): Security forces in Meghalaya and Assam have launched a massive manhunt to rescue abducted State Bank of India official V K Gupta even as representatives of banks in Garo Hills area today appealed to the abductors to release officer unharmed.
Gupta, the assistant general manager (inspection) of State Bank of India(SBI) posted in Guwahati was abducted in Goalpara district of Assam by armed miscreants on Thursday evening while he was returning from Mendipathar area of Meghalaya. A group of motorcycle-borne armed miscreants abducted Gupta immediately after he crossed Meghalaya border in Krishnoi area of Goalpara district.
A massive manhunt has been launched by security forces on both sides of Assam and Meghalaya border to rescue the bank official, police sources said here today. Representatives of banks having business operations in Garo Hills of Meghalya met today and unanimously appealed to abductors to release Gupta unharmed.
The Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) N Ramachandran had said yesterday he was in touch with his counterpart in Assam to step up security in both sides of the area to trace Gupta.
