Assam-M'laya border meeting on May 24



SHILLONG, May 21: In view of the uneasy calm prevailing at Langpih in the Assam-Meghalaya interstate border, top officials of both the state governments will be meeting on Thursday to sort out the differences that erupted recently and as part of a dialogue to end the decade-old boundary crisis, officials said here on Monday. “We will be meeting on May 24 as part of the Chief Secretary-level talks of both the governments,” State Chief Secretary W M S Pariat said.
According to the Chief Secretary, the recent incident at Langpih, in which a community building built by the villagers was demolished by Assam government officials, would also be discussed with his counterpart in Assam.
Pariat was however, not sure whether the building which was dismantled was a new structure or a replacement of the old one. The building built next to the Langpih market was dismantled on May 19 by Assam government officials.
Langpih is one of the disputed areas along the interstate border which falls under West Khasi Hills district and Kamrup district in neighboring Assam.
Meghalaya and Assam have 12 areas of difference along theinter-state border and the matter got worse when in May 2010 four youths from Meghalaya were shot dead by Assam police during a clash Langpih.
Meghalaya had adopted a resolution to urged the Centre for the constitution of a border commission which was rejected by Assam government.
Meghalaya Chief Minister said his government has strategies which would be adopted in a manner which would be acceptable to the approach of settlement of border issues. The long pending border disputed also came to the fore for discussion in the recent Budget session of both the Houses.
