2000 - U.S. Senator John McCain returns to work after surgery to remove skin cancers.

2006 - Billionaire financier George Soros pledged $50 million to help the United Nations tackle extreme poverty and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.

2006 - Former Texas Governor Ann Richards, who sparred with former President George H.W. Bush and later lost the state's top job to his son, President George W. Bush, died. She was 73.

2008 - Czech Republic's Barbora Spotakova sets world record in women's javelin throw.

2008 - Series of fatal bomb blasts in New Delhi, India.
