Do you support compulsory voting in elections?
Some of those who voted yes had this to say:
• It will definitely give an individual a sense of belongingness towards a responsible citizen. It is also enshrined in the Indian constitution as a fundamental rights to every individual to exercise his/her franchise without fear.
• Eligible non voters cant sit back and complain. Why not decide for yourself when you can.
• Yes its very important for the people to that voting is not only their right, but its a power given to them. Dirty politics will come to the end if people, especially those who stay in the village. Cause most of the villagers are so innocent that they become the easy prey for wrong and fak candidates. Yes voting should be made compulsory, People should decide the future, not Individuals.
• It will be in the interest of Democracy.
• Just look at the quality of politicians we have. Its just so pathetic. We have corrupt, uneducated, naive, lazy politicians, most of who have won their elections through money power and by hiring goondas to win them votes. But we cant blame these corrupted politicians, because the average voter in Nagaland is not exercising his vote. This trend must change in Nagaland. If not, we are going to enter into a very difficult time and more and more corrupt politicians will ill repute will come to power. So the best weapon is compulsory voting. Many people may say this is undemocratic, but in the case of Nagaland, maybe this is required to ensure that the democratic voices will win elections. Only when the educated Naga cast his or her vote, than we can change the election process and see that the right candidate who will serve the people is voted to power. Compulsory election is the need of the hour to bring about electoral reforms in Nagaland.
• Yes, it should be made compulsory to reduce proxy voting.
• Yes how else would we lazy Nagas get off our butts and vote?
• This may be the only way to overcome proxy voting and all the other illegal methods that are used in Nagaland. Elections in Nagaland is very dirty and is full of money and muscle power. One of the reason for this is because most of the genuine and educated people dont vote, this allows the politicians and their goons to take advantage of the situation and apply all kinds of methods. But through compulsory voting, the politicians and their goons will not be able to use force, because they cannot influence all the people. So i feel that with compulsory voting, the illegal methods and the use of muscle power will slowly disappear in Nagaland.
Some of those who voted no had this to say:
• No, it is the right of the person to decide whether to vote or not to vote. Democracy is a matter of choice. Once the notion of compulsion is legislated, it is no longer democracy. Rather than compulsory voting, people should be educated on the need to exercise their adult franchise.
• If adult franchise was a duty and not a right, than I guess compulsory voting sounds logical. But in India, voting is a right and so since it is a right, it also implies that it is the right of the citizen to decide not to exercise that voting power.
• Forcing someone 2 vote s Dictatorship. How can I vote with a clear conscience when so far Nagaland has had only THUGS,BOORS,TYRANTS & LEECHES as candidates ???4 me tat wld b like giving my house-key 2 a robber ! Give me law-abiding people who genuinely want 2 serve & work 4 their homeland & I'll definitely vote 4 dem. Anyway, we don't really need 2 vote n Nagaland becoz PROXY VOTING & BOOTH-CAPTURING r d real ways of winning elections!
• Naga system of election is different. Naga way of election might work better than guns and money power election for a below average citizen. Let it share, eldest may have little more, rotate and trust within...
• As one who believe in the power of democracy, I don’t agree at all with compulsory voting because it contravenes the right of adult franchise. It will be sheer madness to make voting compulsory. India will cease to be a democratic country if voting is compulsory.
• No, Compulsory n Democracy do no go together. N ne case rigging, booth capturing, removal f names f votes, etc by politicians deny many citizens thr God-gvn right. If votng s 2 b made cmplsry negative votng shud also be dr.
• I do not support compulsory voting in Nagaland because this will only benefit the rich and the powerful who are already in power. The use of money and guns is a known thing is Nagaland and by introducing compulsory voting, it will only lead to increase in violence. What we need is a complete overhauling of the election system. The Indian election system that we have in Nagaland is not appropriate for the Naga situation, we need to devise a new election system. Compulsory voting is the opposite of democracy and so this is not applicable.
• A person should vote only if he wants to. Making it compulsory to vote is, in my opinion, meaningless.
Some of those who voted others had this to say:
• If India introduces any law that makes voting compulsory, than India will no longer be a democratic country. One of the principles of democracy is the adult franchise and means that a citizen has the right to exercise that right in any way that s/he deems right.
• Compulsory voting in Nagaland will not work because this is being imposed upon by Nagas. Naga people believe in the democratic system of consensus building. This has been the way that leaders have been chosen. Now, in the modern world consensus building may be seen as a difficult process to implement, but am sure if people were to think about it and work out a way in which this can be implemented in the modern scenario, I am sure this will prove to be more democratic. In this way the use of proxy voting, money, guns and other undemocratic means will become obsolete.
• As long as rigging, booth capturing and proxy voting is not totally curbed in Nagaland, there is no point of having compulsory voting. Even now, when majority of the people are not voting, the state is not able to ensure free and fair elections and the statistics wrongly show that 80% people have voted. It makes sense to have compulsory voting only when there free and fair elections can be assured.
• It is a fact that the political system in our state is miserable. Compulsory voting is off course good but not very good. People mostly goes for money, so when thus process starts the system becomes worse. Compulsory voting is also not required unless one decides his views honestly, we need a decision that comes from one honest heart. Most political leaders are hypocrites, they say good things in holy places and other places but they don’t do effectively. It’s a shame for them.
• The fact that people are talking about compulsory voting in India indicates that maybe democracy itself has failed in India. If democracy were alive and well, there would be no need at all to even think about compulsory voting, which actually contradicts democratic principles. The fact that majority of the people in India are living in poverty and are illiterate means that there is more chances that unfair means will be used in elections because the voters are not educated and literate voters. In Nagaland itself the use of money, muscle and guns is very evident and that is why the voice of the genuine voter is not heard at all. Compulsory voting will not solve the problem because the problems lies in the fact that that the voters are ill informed and are mostly illiterate voters. What is required is mass education on voting and elections and the voters should be given clear information on what they are voting for so that they can vote for the right person. People are also fed up of voting because it has not brought about any betterment in their lives. People are tired.
