Ho Ho Ho
Ho Ho Ho Santa Claus is getting ready for December. To think this signature cry of Santa nearly got lost in a politically correct verbal storm in 2007. In America a small segment of Blacks (African Americans) compose outrageous and demeaning lyrics for Hip Hop (rap) music. One of the lines is “Nappy-headed Ho” which characterizes certain Black women who sport cropped hairs because of thick curls. ‘Nappy-headed’ for the hairstyle and ‘ho’ for loose woman (or prostitute). Blacks demeaning Blacks is one thing, but if a White man says the same ugly words to Black folks cry of racism erupts.
In 2007 Don Imus a radio host in jest called Rutgers University Women Basketball Team (Blacks) “Nappy-headed Hos”. A volcano of visceral outcry and condemnation (abominable, racist, sexist) erupted. Don had to apologise to the women and later was forced to resign his position on radio because of public pressures and the skittishness of financial sponsors to continue with him.
The influence of this political correctness reached as far as Australia when there was an advice for (the) Santa Claus(es) to stop hollering Ho Ho Ho, because it might offend some people. Thanks, but no thanks. This silly advice was not followed --- Santa Claus was ‘born’ long before political correctness entered the modern consciousness.
No one knows the exact birthday of Jesus, but December 25 is good enough to remember His birth and celebrate the joy He brought to the world. And oh, when in America avoid saying Ho, unless you’re referring to Santa.
