Manipur’s Sangai International University derecognised by UGC

New, Delhi, May 29 (MExN): The Sangai International University in Churachandpur, Manipur, has been removed from the University Grant Commission (UGC) list of universities under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, as per a public notification posted on the Commission’s website.

“The university cannot offer any UGC specified degree of Under-Graduate, Post Graduate level including Ph.D. Prospective students and parents are hereby advised not to take admission in any of the programme of university from the date of issue of this Public Notice,” it added.

As per the notice issued on May 15, the decision came after the university’s repeated failure to provide required inspection information despite multiple requests from the UGC dating back to 2015.

According to the UGC, the university was established as a state private university by the Government of Manipur and was listed by the UGC in June 2015.

However, the university did not comply with requests for information sent on July 3, 2015; August 12, 2015; October 21, 2016, March 1, 2019; and January 11, 2021.

Consequently, the UGC issued a show cause notice on December 19, 2023, asking the university to explain why it should not be removed from the UGC list.  A copy of the show cause notice was also sent to the Department of Higher Education, Government of Manipur, seeking immediate action and comments, the notice maintained.

Despite this, the UGC did not receive any response from the university or comments from the Government of Manipur, it added.
As a result, the UGC has formally derecognised Sangai International University and it can no longer offer any UGC-specified degrees at the undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral levels, it added.

“In the absence of UGC approval, any Degree issued/awarded by the Sangai University, Manipur shall not be treated recognised/valid for the purpose of higher education and employment,” it added.
