The Naga Students Federation (NSF) said today that the Nagaland state government should immediately take steps to complete the foothill road, adding that Naga people need “proper means of communication” and that the foothill road was of paramount importance.

A team of NSF officials led by its Vice President, Dievi Yano had yesterday visited Tzürangkong range in Mokokchung bordering Assam and met the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung today, after which they addressed a press meet at the AKM office.

On the purpose of their visit to the border, the NSF said that they were there “not to solve the problem but to observe and ascertain how NSF can participate to help resolve the problem.” They said they visited Aosenden Village to extend solidarity to the people of the border villages affected by the economic blockade.

The NSF rued that Naga people were “always at the receiving end of economic blockades” and demanded that construction of the foothill road be completed without delay. The NSF also observed that the border issue was not a new problem and that it would require “political will” to resolve it. The NSF was also of the view that the Mokokchung district administration was sincere in resolving the issue but lamented that it was beyond their ambit as it was “political” in nature. NSF also observed that the Mokokchung district administration’s meeting with the Jorhat counterpart recently was a “deadlock.”

NSF also claimed that they saw that Assam Police have encroached and erected a barricade about 1 km inside Aosenden village territory and that the Assam side was simultaneously imposing an economic blockade. “The Naga people are mentally prepared to face any eventuality,” the NSF claimed, while appreciating the Tzürangkong border villagers for exhibiting restraint and patience despite repeated provocations from across the state border.

NSF also supported the AKM’s demands that the “sanctioned building structure to be constructed at Aosenden village be completed without further delay” and that the “temporary Assam Police post at Aosenden village be immediately evacuated or removed to avoid further tension” in the border.
