Increased post, decreased selection

As an aspiring candidate of State Civil Service, we strongly support the disclosure by Chanchi Kithan under the caption. “NPSC vacancies vis-à-vis candidates” dated Sep 21, 2011. Declaration of the NPSC Prelims result 2011 dated Sep 18 does contains qualms which needs to be clarified by the Commission.
Pertaining to NPSC Prelims 2011 it is really perturbing to see the low ratio (Ratio 1:6) of candidates selected for the Mains exam 2011,comparing with the previous years (Ratio 1:8) .We have been appearing NPSC since 2009 and the figures approximately were:
1.    In 2009 for 54 posts, 484 candidates sat for the Mains exam (approx 1:8) out of which 167 candidates went for the Viva-Voice (approx 1:3).
2.    In 2010 for 64 posts,506 candidates sat for the Mains exam (approx 1:8) out of which 192 candidates are going for the Viva-Voice this Sep & Oct (ratio 1:3).
As far as we know, this year’s post vacancies counts up to triple digits i.e. 133 posts as per the advertisement. So, how did the ratio stepped down so low is our question here? In reality, there should   be more than a thousand or at least that if ratio is to be considered here if not, then the Commission has the right to explain the selection procedure they adopted for Mains 2009 and Mains 2010. Has the selection ratio been reduced from this year? And if it is, will it continue that way in the near future? Additionally, if the Commission is estimation/planning that the no. of candidates to be selected for the Viva-Voice 2011 will be the same ratio like previous years (1:3), then, it would be a gross violation of equality of opportunities comparing with the last year’s Mains candidates (ratio1:8), who had struggled endless days and nights to secure a berth in the Viva-Voice (Viva-Voice ratio last year was 1:3), which means that last year’s Mains exam was more challenging fro the candidates.
We all know that in this kind of exams even one mark could be a deciding factor on your life…so how can the abnormality of nearly say 100+candidates (deducted) be taken so lightly unless the Commission has adopted some new provisions in the selection procedure .It would be really disheartening and discouraging if the selection pattern (ratio of 1:3) continues the same way for the Viva-Voice 2011. Let this be an eye opener for those who are going to appear the coming years as well as be a note to be referred in the future. We all hope that there would be no need of another “Transparency Seeking Group” to evolve. Further, we would really appreciate if the State’s highest recruiting body of the clarify without further delays.
We hope the Students’ body in not sleeping.
