International conference on Anthropocene Era: Ecojustice and Sustainability underway at FAC

An International conference on Environmental Humanities in the ‘Anthropocene Era: Ecojustice and Sustainability’ organized by the Department of English & Department of Geography, Fazl Ali college in collaboration with Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) & Lemsachenlok, Longleng sponsored by Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung got underway on 4 October at Fazl Ali college, Mokokchung.

Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, speaking as the guest of honor at the international conference on Environmental Humanities in the Anthropocene Era: Ecojustice and Sustainability at Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung on October 4.

Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, who was the guest of honor, in his speech said that everyone is directly or indirectly connected to the theme. Prof Jagadish questioned if we are the victims or perpetrators, if we are controlling nature, or if nature is controlling us. He maintained that in the name of science, we make interventions, but we do not know how much we are able to do.

Prof Murali Sivaramakhrishnan, founder & President, ASLE, India, in his key note address on the topic “Towards Eco Justice and Sustainability: Recognizing Non-violent Alternatives” said that humans have evolved a culture of dominance that almost unhinges living and non-living things from the cosmic order, and we have entered the “Anthropocene Era.” Human activities have a serious impact on the earth’s climate, environment, and biodiversity.

He talked about how literature and art have always explored nature and human beings in their own various ways and how human culture is interlinked with outer and outer nature. He further talked about the concepts of eco-justice and sustainability and the interface between the two.

Earlier, at the inaugural, Wati I. Imchen, Principal, FAC espoused hope that the conference will achieve its objectives towards a better understanding of the environment and sustainability.

The inaugural programme also witnessed a cultural performance by the students of Fazl Ali College. Altogether there are 37 paper presenters in the conference.
