Regionalism in Nagaland

The first regional party "Democratic Party of Nagaland" was formed on October 21, 1963, under the chairmanship of Late A. Kevichusa at Kohima with a group of Naga Leaders. That was the first Regional Party in Northeast India.
The main aims and objectives of forming this new party:

A)    Was to act as facilitator or bridge between to contending parties - the Government of India and NNC. B) To shift political power to democratically elected people from the power of Bureaucrats.

C)    To preserve Naga identity, culture, Naga customary law etc.

D)    Parties intention was to set up a pattern of administration best suited to the tribes.

E)    And lasting good relationship with Govt. of India for permanent and honourable solution of Indo- Naga problem through re- consolation. This Democratic Party of Nagaland was registered with election commission of India On December 2nd, 1963.

The only Regional and registered political party "Democratic Party of Nagaland" fought the first general election in Nagaland in February 1964 under the President ship of Late A Kevichusa. Out of 22 candidates 12 legislators were elected from this political Party. There after cease- fire agreement was made between Govt. of India and NNC in the year 1964. Late Joy Prakesh Narayan, Mical Scoot and Bimala Prasad Chaliha took active part in making that cease- fire agreement.

Hardly six months, so after election when talks begun with NNC and Govt. of India, the elected legislators of "Democratic Party of Nagaland" felt their task had been accomplished and they should not stand in the talks, hence the entire DPN legislatures resigned from the assembly for the interest of Nagas.

Now there are two regional parties in Nagaland. There approach for Indo- Naga issue is almost same. Both the parties want to solve this longstanding problem through Re-consolation. They are the facilitators in this issue. Now this is the duty of both the regional parties of Nagaland keep-aside all others differences, they should unitedly work together for early, honourable, acceptable and permanent solution of Indo- Naga Problem. If all the "Democratic Party of Nagaland" legislatures can sacrifices their seats for the interest of the Nagas, why these regional parties cannot at least unite themselves and work together for the interest of the Nagas. The Nagas wants unity among the Nagas and Peace. This is the Demand of the Day.
