The Golden Thread of Friendship

Vishü Rita Krocha

Friendship means a lot to me. In fact I hold it as dear as family. Sometimes it gets a little more precious than family. But honestly, they are two different things that bring me joys in equal measures and in truth I can’t quite compare them because both family and friends are special things.

All my life, I have been associated with friends of sorts. I can’t quite say all of them are always dear to the heart because some have stayed only a brief while, said a hello, shared a little and the next thing I know is they are gone beyond my reach. Even destiny does not bring them back again. But I guess it works that way. Certain people are simply meant to stand by you no matter how far you may roam. It doesn’t end where the good times prevail, it goes on and on that you almost feel you have been together for as long as you can remember.

It’s a wonderful thing to own a friend, to be able to smile just thinking that whatever happens you will have someone to walk with you to the farthest end of the road. Even among the variance of colours that surround us, it’s nice to know that there is always an anchor where you can safely rest all your thoughts on, regardless of the kind of feelings that is battling inside your mind. Indeed memories are made of these- of discovering a friend among strangers, in fact the wonder of how easy it actually was that instantly you clicked with a particular person even without having to try, of the numberless days you laughed, cried or talked about all the things under the sun, even doing the craziest things together without having to worry what people would say.

There’s really no end to something that is genuinely true and real. But it’s also not always easy to find someone special in the crowd, who would never trade your trust for anything else. Yet when you know you have a friendship that will last you a lifetime, life gets better in leaps and bounds. ‘A true friend never fails’ and all the troubles or for that matter, all things beautiful reach the highest pinnacle when you can share it with another being who will never judge you but understand and treasure you just the way you are.

I’ve always looked forward to the first Sunday of August every year. It’s not that other days I can’t gleefully spend days with friends or that it becomes less important for me to remember and keep them. But because on friendship day, in a very special way, I get to think of them, who have held out their hands to me in friendship. I also have this sense of gratefulness that sweeps over me. You know there are things I forget to be grateful for but because friendship happens to be one of the many reasons why I love life I’m truly thankful that there is such a thing for all of us to keep.

We can’t ask for more, we just have to thank the One above for our friends. God knows what I’d ever do without them! And by the way, do you also know that friendship is really massive? It’s one of the larger-than-life gifts that you and I have been given. It’s boundary-less, limit-less, colour-less (yet ironically full of colours), time-less. You also don’t have to be of the same age to be friends, you don’t have to find someone from your tribe and the like, you don’t have to be rich materially because it doesn’t matter if you are poor or wealthy, there will still be a friend made just for you and yes, friendship is also one of the best things you’ll ever encounter in life. Cherish, keep and love it. Happy Friendship Day!
