Tight security measures have been taken up in and around Imphal in view of the Assembly session which will begin from August 26.

The Monsoon session of Manipur Legislative Assembly will have only two sittings.

The security measures are being taken up against the backdrop of ongoing agitation demanding justice for the 12-year-old girl student who was found dead by hanging in her hostel room in a controversial circumstance on July 18 last.

Mention may be made that the Assembly complex is located just adjacent to the Thangmeiband, the locality where the deceased student hailed from and the epicentre of the ongoing agitations.

The police authority is apprehensive of the agitating people attempting to storm the Assembly complex while the Assembly sitting is in progress.

Besides this, many other civil society organisations are also likely to stage protest around the Assembly complex raising their demands which the state government is yet to address.

Meanwhile, as per a tentative business, obituary reference, presentation of business advisory committee, motion for election of three financial committees for the term of 2019-20 report and resolutions of the government will be taken up on the first day of the session.

On the second and last day of the session, the house will have question hour, government business and presentation of reports of the Assembly committees.

In order to maintain law and order and provide adequate security measures for smooth conduct of the session, the state government has taken up tight security arrangement in and around the periphery of the Assembly complex in Imphal’s Chingmeirong.

A source from the state Police department said that the entire surroundings of the Assembly secretariat will be under the tight security vigils during the session.

Well ahead of the scheduled session, police have already intensified security measures in the localities nearby the Assembly complex by way of conducting mopping operations and random frisking and checking on the roads nearby the complex, the police source said.
