A verbal altercation arose between Assam policemen and villagers of Longtsiri over construction of a building on the Nagaland side of the border on May 2 evening.

This latest incident allegedly occurred after a team of Assam policemen received reports of the construction and attempted to halt its activities.

According to the Gaonbura (GB) of Longtsiri, M Kithan who was present at the site, the policemen numbered around 4-5, led by an officer-in-charge came over towards Nagaland. The GB clarified that the land belongs to a resident of Longtsiri village and well within the jurisdiction of Nagaland.

“We also expressed the same to the Assam police and told them that construction will continue as the land is not a disputed area,” the GB said. After several minutes of haggling, the police left from the scene, the GB reported.  This was not a one-off incident, Kithan claimed as the police had also previously caused similar harassment to the villagers in the past.

Longtsiri, located under Bhandari sub-division of Wokha district, was also in the news last year when several workers purportedly from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) crossed over from Assam for oil exploration work.  The village sits near to the strategic Champang oilfield which has been left abandoned for almost three decades.
