1 teacher school: Also administrator, tutor, peon etc

Dimapur, July 24 (MExN): Sorry education stories in Nagaland’s government schools are still going strong. This time, Keor village in Kiphire has complained to the authorities about the shameful state of affairs in the village’s school – the school has only one teacher. And he teaches the entire nursery to class-III and functions as the schools administrator. So practically when he leaves to draw his salary or has to take off for official duties, the school goes on holidays.

The Village Education Committee of Keor village today addressed a letter to the director of School Education seeking immediate redress. The village wrote to the director: “The GPS Keor village has 3 teachers till July 2008, but since then 2 teachers said to be attached to the DIS office Kiphire and now left lone teacher in the school. Now, he takes charge of all the administrative duty of the school and covers all the class from Nursery to Class III.”

But the story does not end there: “At times when he is out of station to draw his salary or for other official duties the school remains close till his return. This hampers the career of the students. In this regard, the VEC has written an appeal letter to the DIS several times but no positive ratification has been made,” the VEC said. The VEC has urged the Director of School Education to look into the matter with urgency for proper functioning of the school.
