Legal Awareness Campaign to empower citizens

Kohima | July 4 : Legal Awareness Campaign was launched in colleges and higher secondary schools today at Red Cross Conference hall, organized by Law College Kohima in collaboration with Nagaland Legal Services Authority (NLSA) and Nagaland Voluntary consumers’ organization (NVCO). Secretary Legal Service Authority and Additional District Session Judge Kohima, Mayang Lima was the main speaker at the function.
Addressing the gatherings Lima said NLSA provides free legal services to the weaker section of the society and this act has to go free of cost be it in counseling or reconciliation, legal option, advocating to eligible person and many other that are eligible for a member of SC/ST or a victim of trafficking in human beings or beggar as referred to in Article 23 of the constitution of India or a women or child or even a person with disability.
He added that legal justice/service may be availed to all cases of a civil nature such as property disputes, matrimonial and custody matters, labor service matters, compensation in motor accident cases, consumer disputes, money suits, outstanding loan amount in the banks, financial institutions etc which can be applied by filing an application in writing stating in brief, the grievances or the case for which legal aid is required. Speaking on legal aid vis-à-vis legal literacy, the speaker maintained, if a person is unable to obtain access to a court of law for having his wrongs redressed or for defending himself against a criminal charge, justice becomes unequal and laws which are meant for his protection, have no meaning and to that extend fail in their purposes.
He asserted legal system should be able to use even the court and the case process as educative medium between the law and the public adding that law should be accessible to people as the state has no obligation to ensure that laws are understandably available to layman and while all the attention in various reports and programmes has been on legal aid schemes to make court accessible, all the emphasis in future should be made on making law accessible, not only in the interest of the layman to have access to the law but the legal system itself benefits from information commitment by the layman to it.
Lok Adalat is another point he refreshed on, while also appealed the citizens to make avail of this service as this can take place anytime, anywhere, for settlement of pending cases as well as disputes which have not been brought before the court thereby avoiding costs, delays and ensuring speedy justice overcoming legal technicalities. He lamented that Nagas are not responsive and called for spread of this legal awareness litigating public at large on various issued of social and legal importance, rendering free legal aid to the pioneers and under-trails.
