‘Nagaland can do very good in cashew’

Dimapur, September 27 (MExN): A two day training programme on Cashew processing and distribution of Cashew nut processing machineries is underway at the State Horti Nursery, 4th mile, green park, Dimapur. 

Organized by the Department of Horticulture government of Nagaland under TM-NE, eight units from Dimapur, Wokha, Peren, and Mokokchung are participating in the training. The participants in the training will also receive Cashew nut processing machineries which are financially assisted by National Horti Board, government of India.

Resource person for the training is Manager, Accurate Engineering Industries, Kudal, Maharashtra, Ravi Koyande.

Deputy Director of Horticulture and i/c Cashew Development Pawan Kumar addressed the welcome speech and in his keynote address stated that the programme is the first such cashew processing training in the state. “Cashew is the second highest rated crop next to saffron in horti and I hope through this training it will go a long way,” he said. Introduced in Nagaland in 1999 on trial basis under ministry of agriculture, it was informed that Nagaland can do very good in cashew because of the climate. Planted in six districts of Nagaland currently, Kumar shared, that Cashew production will help its rural economy.  He also said “today is a great day for Cashew farmers and I hope it will go a long way in developing their economy.” 

The technical session of day one comprised of: Brief description of cashew processing machineries by the resource person, procedures and steps of cashew processing by Deputy Director Horticulture, demonstration of cashew boiling, demonstration of de-shelling of cashew nut and demonstration on drying, peeling and packaging. 

Earlier, the inaugural programme was chaired by the District Horticulture Officer, Dimapur, Eyongal Natso, while vote of thanks was presented by assistant Horticulture Officer Dimapur Temsu. Also present at the training was DHO, Peren.
