NIRF Ranking: Nagaland University lingers in 101-150 band

Nagaland University (NU) continues linger in 101-150 band as per the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), ‘India Rankings 2020’ released by Union Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on June 11. 


Launched in 2016, the NIRF ranks Institutions of Higher Education in various categories on the basis of their performance on five broad categories of parameters. 


In 2019 too, the lone central university in Nagaland was slotted in the same category. 


NU was ranked best in 2018, when the university was ranked 95 among the top universities in India. However, its performance since then has fallen below the top 100 bracket.

 

Overall category
In the overall ranking, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati secured the 7th spot while Tezpur University, Tezpur ranked at 65. Gauhati University and North Eastern Hill University, Shillong figured at the 72nd and 74th spot respectively while National Institute of Technology Silchar and Mizoram University also figured in the top 100 list at 94 and 100 respectively.


Dibrugarh University, Assam University, Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar ranked in the 101-150 slot while Nagaland University, Manipur University, Imphal and Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok were in the 151-200 band.

 

University category
In the university category, Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru was ranked first, while Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi took the second spot.  Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi was third in the category.     


Among the universities in the North East, Tezpur University was ranked top at 39 while Gauhati University was ranked 47. The North Eastern Hill University followed closely at 49. 


Mizoram University and Dibrugarh University were also ranked in the top 100 category at 67 and 84 respectively. 


Apart from NU, Manipur University, Sikkim Manipal University, Sikkim University, Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar and Assam University were in the 101-150 slot. Assam Don Bosco University, Cotton University, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology, and Tripura University figured in the 151-200 slot.    

 

College category
In the college category, Miranda House, New Delhi was ranked first followed by Lady Shri Ram College For Women in Second and Hindu College in third. 


Two institutes from the region also made it to the list with Pachhunga University College Aizawl in 101-150 slot and S.K. Women's College, Bishnupur Manipur (150-200).


According to NIRF website, four colleges from Nagaland – 1 in Mokokchung and 3 in Dimapur participated in the exercise.

 

Engineering & Medical category
In the engineering category, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay took the top three spot respectively. 


IIT Guwahati was also ranked high at 7. Most of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) from the region made it to the list but NIT Nagaland was missing. 


NIT Silchar at 46 was the second highest ranked engineering institute from the region followed by NIT Meghalaya at 61 followed by Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati at 66.


NIT Agartala also made it to the top 100 category at 75. 


North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology, Itanagar, National Institute of Technology Manipur and NIT Arunachal Pradesh were ranked at 145, 158 and 200 respectively while Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) was ranked in 251-300 band. 


In medical category, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal West     was ranked 38.


Speaking on the occasion, MHRD Minister Pokhriyal said that these rankings acts as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set of criteria and helps universities to improve their performance on various ranking parameters and identify gaps in research and areas of improvement.
