Heavy rain and thunderstorm wreaked havoc at Shangnyu village under Mon district on May 8 evening severely damaging the Shangnyu Village Government High School (GMS) building, the Village Education Committee (VEC) reported.

The school building was constructed under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), a centrally sponsored scheme of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Fortunately there were no reported casualties as the incident occurred during non-school hours. However, in the wake, concerns have been raised on the construction quality of the school building.

Nahpoh, President of the Shangnyu Students' Union, stated that while there were no reported casualties, the educational infrastructure suffered extensive damage due to the natural disaster. He expressed dissatisfaction with the construction quality, noting that it fell short of expectations and was seemingly built without due diligence.

Urging swift action, Nahpoh called upon the concerned departments and the Mon Administration to promptly assess the damage and initiate necessary repairs to ensure the safety and convenience of students attending the school.
